Many Thanks to Matt Long..... 06/23/2010
In March of 2009, I was leafing through my wife Trish's new copy of Runner's World magazine, and I ran across an article about a tough-as-nails New York City firefighter named Matt Long. In December of 2005, Matt was run over and crushed by a bus while riding his bike to the FDNY training academy. Three years and 20+ surgeries later, he ran the 2008 New York City marathon.
So I'm sitting there reading this story -- a 5'11, 260-pound, 39-year-old with achy joints, fallen arches, and a bad back, who had convinced himself he was too old and too fat to accomplish much physically anymore. And I had a sort of epiphany: If this guy can get run over by a bus (and not just run over, but about as crushed as a person could possibly get) and go on to run a marathon, the least I could do was get off my sorry ass and get in better shape.
